Tremor Classification

Tremors such as hand tremor, heard tremor and voice tremor are classified by cause and symptoms. Below you can find 5 of the most common types of tremor along with their symptoms.

- Essential tremor, also known as benign essential tremor, is the most common type out of over 20 kinds. It usually occurs after the age of 40 and it can be non progressive but in some cases the hand tremor is progressive starting on one hand and within 3 years it will affect the other hand too. The tremor can become more sever along the years and it can be severe enough to affect daily activities. Due to the fact that the essential tremor is not associated with any pathology the most frequent causes are stress, high emotions, low blood sugar or exhaustion.

SEVERS DISEASE

- Parkinsonian tremor is caused by damaged neurons in the thalamus, the part of the brain that controls body movements. The tremor affects hands, face, legs and trunk and can be aggravated by stress. It usually develops after the age of 60 and might be treated by surgery.

- Cerebellar tremor appears at the end of an intended movement like pushing a button and has as cause stroke, multiple sclerosis or brain tumors.

- Psychogenic tremor also known as hysterical tremor appears during a kinetic movement. It appears and disappears suddenly. Its incidence increases in high stress conditions and can disappear if the patient is distracted, the patients with psychogenic tremor suffer from a conversion disorder or other psychiatric disease.

- Physiologic tremor occurs in every individual at least once in its lifetime and has no clinical significance. It is not very visible and can be triggered by stress, low blood sugar, thyroid dysfunction, mercury poisoning, drug use or alcohol withdrawal. It can appear in all muscle groups and can be detected by extending the arm and placing a sheet of paper on top of the hands. The tremor has no neurological connection and can be treated once the cause has been determined.
