Overeating is the number one cause of obesity in America. So many women and men complaining about their weight, only to turn right around to their dinner tables and inhale every bit of food in sight. But why is it that people have such a hard time trying not to overeat? Why is it that enough if never enough? Why can't we control ourselves long enough to stop eating when we know we've had enough to eat? Well the following may provide some insight as to why people overeat so that you'll know what you can do to stop this phenomenon.
Hunger Confusion. Lots of people overeat because they believe that they are hungry when they really aren't. If you aren't drinking enough water throughout the day, then you will get hunger pangs, but they aren't signaling for your body to eat. They are signaling to you that your body is dehydrated and needs some water. So if you are feeling hunger pangs, before you pick up a hamburger or some other fattening food, pick up a bottle of water and see if the pangs don't go away.

Stress. Lots of people use food as an outlet for stress. They come home from a hard day at work where they've had to talk to a lot of people, or had to sit in a lot of meetings, or just had a lot of work to do. So when they get home, the only thing that they feel will de-stress them is food. Food becomes a source of relaxation. But there are other ways to relax including taking a hot bubble bath, lighting some candles, and reading a book. These are less fattening and much healthier for you.
Depression. Unfortunately, a lot of people eat because they are depressed. Perhaps their self-esteem is low, they are sad for one reason or another, or they just don't know what to do other than eat. Depression is a serious disease. Like any other disease, it needs to be treated by a doctor. Depression is usually treated under the care of a psychologist or a psychiatrist, depending on how sever the depression is. If you or someone you know is suffering from depression, then you need to get to a doctor immediately.
Greed. Unlike any of the other reasons, this is reason is just plain pathetic. A lot of people over eat because they are just plain greedy. There is no other way to say it. They aren't confused about being hungry, they aren't stressed, and they aren't suffering from depression. They eat because they enjoy eating food and they can't get enough of the way it tastes; they have to have more and more and more. Enough is never enough, until they get to be so full that they feel sick. The trick here is to eat slowly and really take the time to enjoy your food. The slower you eat, the fuller you will feel and the more you will enjoy your food which is what you want to do anyway; in eating more, you are looking to enjoy the taste of the food again and again. So save yourself some calories and just eat slower.
