Techniques & Tips To Treat Excessive Sweating

The first well known tip is to try over-the-counter antiperspirants. If you've already tried this and you know they don't work, go to your doctor and have a thorough checkup.

Oftentimes, there will be an underlying problem causing sweating, which can be taken care of. If not, your doctor can prescribe stronger antiperspirants available only by prescription.

There are some oral medications you can take if antiperspirants don't work, including Cogentin, Ditropan and Robinul. Injecting Botox into the affected areas as also seem to work for many people, since this interrupts signals the body gives to induce sweating.

However, this is expensive and can cost upwards of 00 or more to receive regular injections in the affected areas.

Iontopheresis is a procedure whereby an electrical current is passed through the affected area; similar to Botox, it interrupts the signals the body gives to induce sweating. However, this can be painful and the machine used to do this can be expensive, upwards of 5.

For a permanent final solution if no other methods work, you can also opt to have surgery. There are two types. One surgery severs the relevant nerves that cause the sweating so that the sweating can a longer happen. This is called endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. In some cases, this does not solve the problem, because even when nerves are cut in one area, the body overcompensates by sweating more in other areas.

Yet another type of surgery is sweat gland removal. It's done under local anesthetic and is a pretty painless procedure. There is some discomfort involved, but the procedure takes 60 to 90 minutes to do and has no lasting postsurgical effects.

This may be a better choice as compared to endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, because there is no risk of residual "overcompensation" sweating in another area.

Finally, the herb sage has also been shown to be somewhat effective in treating hyperhidrosis. Taken internally, sage capsules or tea can help have a "drying" effect on the body.

So take heart. If excessive sweating is something you suffer from, there are treatments that can help. Contact your doctor to determine what treatments you might try.
